Cozumel, also known as “the island of swallows” is Mexico’s largest island
and a wonderful diving and snorkeling destination. Its name comes from the
Mayan Cutzamil, or “land of swallows”,
as legend says Ixchel, goddess of fertility, favored her visitors with flocks
of swallows as a sign of her delight. Located in the most
Eastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel can
easily be visited from Playa del Carmen by Ferry.
A bit of history. The Island of Cozumel has a history of its own. Ever since the ancient
Mayans ruled this land, Cozumel was considered a sanctuary for the fertility goddess
Ixchel. Thousands of Mayan women paid their tribute to Ixchel in pilgrimage to
Cozumel. Later on, in the 1500s, Conquistadores came to
Cozumel in pursue of gold and treasures, finding none, and leaving only a trail
of disease and death. Nearly the entire population of Cozumel died of smallpox
during the Spanish Colony.
Cozumel rediscovered. Centuries had to pass before Cozumel was
rediscovered, this time by the adventurer French oceanographer Jacques
Cousteau, revealing Cozumel’s hidden underwater treasures: intricate reef
formations, crowded with an astounding variety of fish and other sea creatures:
a diver’s paradise. Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are located
right off the path of the
Great
Mayan Reef Barrier, the world's
second largest.
Scuba diving in Cozumel is always exciting; life and colors burst in
every patch of reef across the Great Mayan Reef expanding along the turquoise
