Cenotes. The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its unique underground conditions. Its limestone soil has percolated rain water over millions of years to give place to the world’s longest underground river systems. Parts of the surface land have collapsed over the years creating sinkholes called Cenotes (from the Maya Dzonot, sacred well), windows into this amazing underground world.

Underground river systems. For the past three decades, Cenotes have been explored and river systems have been mapped by cave divers, and still, exploration continues. Literally hundreds of miles of underground rivers spread along the entire Peninsula. Over thousands of years, the dissolved limestone formed amazing speleotherms or mineral deposits, more commonly known as stalactites, stalagmites and columns. The world’s longest underground river systems are located along the Riviera Maya.

Cavern diving. A cavern is the area of a cave reached by natural daylight and is no further than 200 linear ft from the next opening. Caverns are usually broad, cathedral-like vaults submerged in crystalline waters, where you can dive through sunbeams that illuminate amazing stalactite and stalagmite rock formations.
